How To Paint Your Windows Black
A few months agone nosotros sat downward with a company in our home to get a quote for a few windows to be replaced. We wanted to replace a few at a fourth dimension starting with the windows in the front. Oh, and did I mention we wanted black windows? When the quote came back at $28,000 (yes, you read that correctly) nosotros were shocked. Information technology was a higher priced company only it got me thinking: why can't I paint our windows black until we've saved for the right moment to replace all our windows.
Nosotros pushed that thought out of our minds the following months because we didn't think at that place could be a paint suitable for this blazon of project. We would need something that would concluding and a pigment that can too exist used on the outside side of our windows. With us painting our home in the near future, we also demand the windows to be black on the exterior.
I started noticing on Instagram some of my best gals spray painting their window frames. OH, how I craved that expect of black windows for our home. For interior windows, it's perfect! Merely in one case again I needed something to do both if I'm going to spend the time tackling this project. That'southward when I finally discovered Pro-Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic by Sherwin Williams. It'due south a contractors course paint that'southward made to adhere to the slickest of surfaces while maintaining immovability.
**Find the video at the cease of how we painted the windows equally well.
And then guess what I did? I PAINTED MY WINDOWS Blackness AND I LOVE THEM! That totally deserved all capital letters because look at this earlier and later on. I'chiliad nonetheless in shock at the difference paint fabricated tour windows.
And then, yous've already fabricated information technology this far and you're probably wanting to paint your windows as well. In that location are several ways to practice this: spray painting, with a paintbrush or with a pigment sprayer. Today I'll be showing you how to paint your window frames using a paint sprayer. I went this route because I love the finished and flawless look a paint sprayer gives. And to answer a question I'yard certain you lot have right at present: yes our windows still open without any issues or paint peeling!
Here'southward What You'll Need
- Frog Tape (light-green)
- Painters plastic sheeting with tape fastened
- Regular plastic sheeting to cover nearby furniture
- to cover the flooring – you can also use old towels
- Paint sprayer (nosotros used the HomeRight Super End Max)
- Pro Industrial Multi-Surface Acrylic by Sherwin-Williams (nosotros picked Black Magic by SW for our black)
- Pigment mask
Optional:
- Electrical tape to create or hide current grids (budget friendly option)
- Pvc strips for a realistic look to create or hibernate electric current grids.
How to Paint Window Frames Black
The longest and probably the virtually annoying part about this project is all the prep piece of work. There is a lot and you must take your fourth dimension. But I promise you it'due south 100% worth it! That moment you peel back all the plastic and painter'due south tape is so satisfying seeing your make new windows!
Prep Work
Using the dark-green frog tape, you lot'll tape right along the edge of the interior window frame. In other words, you'll be applying your frog tape on the glass equally close to the frames as you tin get it. If you have a top and lesser section to your window like mine, you'll do this to both.
Yous'll then apply the frog record to outer side of the window frame. This is going to give y'all that crisp, clean line without getting paint on the glass or the drywall after applying the paint. This step is crucial and then of import to take your time!
Now that you accept the green frog record applied, y'all'll need to further protect the drinking glass and the outer edges/walls around the window. Since you carefully and precisely applied the frog tape first, you tin exist a picayune more care free with the plastic sheeting with painters tape attached. I attach the whorl of plastic at the superlative of the drinking glass pane making sure the blue tape is overlapping the light-green tape.
Once I have information technology pressed deeply down, I cut the width downwards to size and unroll the plastic sheeting. You'll notice how it magically clings to the window which makes this product very piece of cake to work with. Secure the other 3 sides by taping them down with the Frog Record.
Tip: Every bit you're applying the plastic, don't cover the green tape on the other three sides entirely. Go near halfway onto the record that'south applied on the window. Y'all want to cut the plastic to where information technology leaves a small-scale space so that when you lot tape the other 3 sides down the tape has something to stick to. Too much plastic and you lot're record won't have anywhere to get.
Just like y'all taped off the outer edge of the window frames, you lot'll apply the painter plastic along this light-green tape too. This was yous tin stretch the plastic out over the walls to protect from overspray. You may need to apply additional plastic in ares that are covered. This will also exist a swell time to curtain boosted plastic, old towels, etc. over surround furniture you don't want paint grit getting on.
Time to Paint
The moment you lot've been waiting for: TIME TO Pigment! Hither are a couple things to note about this Multi-Surface Acrylic Pro-Industrial pigment:
- For interior and exterior use.
- Engineered to provide high-hide (in one coat) and stain resistant
- Provides alkyd-like hardness
- Dries fast with dry out fall backdrop. Which means as y'all apply it with your paint sprayer, the paint dries rapidly has it falls. Considering of this, it tin be swept up.
- Cocky-priming to multiple surfaces
- Excellent adhesion to slick and glossy surfaces (howdy aluminum and vinyl window frames)
- Tin can be applied past paintbrush, roller or pigment sprayer
- Can exist color matched in a variety of colors. We went with Black Magic.
Of course, depending on the paint sprayer yous'll be using, your paint prep might look a little different. Since I'thousand suing the HomeRight Super Finish Max, I just have to attach the correct tip, cascade in my paint and offset spraying. Thinning isn't required.
Of import: I highly recommend wearing a pigment mask when using this paint. Since it is mainly acrylic based, the chemicals used in this paint are very stiff. Specially since you can't really open windows during this projection since you're painting them.
Earlier you start, test your paint flow on a bit piece of paper, wood, etc. Yous want to make sure you have a smooth terminate. Then run your hands over all of the record y'all applied on the windows. The tape likes to pop loose sometimes. And so start applying your paint in slow, even strokes. I institute it best to apply the paint on all the vertical pieces first so switch the nozzle for the horizontal pieces. Make sure you get into all the grooves and look at the window frame from all angles to make sure you painted every foursquare inch.
Of course, depending on the paint sprayer yous're using, determines the amount of overspray. For the HomeRight Super Stop Max ,the overspray isn't bad at all! You will observe paint dust that can hands be wiped, swept, vacuumed, etc. You tin see it in the image below on the plastic sheeting. Simply remember, one of the cracking things well-nigh this paint is that dries fast equally it falls so that it lands as paint grit.
This paint only takes one glaze but you nonetheless need to become back and look for spots where you didn't employ plenty. Use the light on your telephone or catch a flashlight to move across every inch of the windows. Lightly and chop-chop spray the spots that need a fiddling more than paint. Information technology's easier to check for that now than to notice it later.
Once your windows are fully covered with the pigment, you'll want to go alee and remove all of the plastic and painter's tape. The concluding matter you want is the paint to stick to the tape and ripping off the window as y'all remove everything.
Applying with a Paint Castor
I wanted to try painting one of my windows with a paintbrush just to run into how it went on, stale, etc. Is it an choice? 100%. Is it my preferred method? Nope. After painting one window, it took three coats of pigment to get a solid look and the finish wasn't as peachy as a paint sprayer. There weren't any strokes merely for me you can't vanquish that finish that a paint sprayer gives.
DIY Window Panes
Ane of the questions I got on echo over on Instagram stories is how I was going to cover the white window panes. In a dream world, they would be on the outside of the glass panes where I could only paint them. So, if yous're one of the lucky ones with them on the outside of the glass, y'all'll just tape around them while taping off the residue of the window frame and paint them all together. BUT! If you lot're similar me with them between the two drinking glass panes, you have to be a little more creative to make them appear black.
Electrical Tape
If you're wanting to stay within a budget, electrical tape is pretty magical with this. Yous'll just apply the black electrical tape over the white panes being careful to go on information technology in a straight line and to not stretch it out also much.
I constitute it easier to extend the electric tape past the windows and so that I could get a cleaner cutting. Don't be afraid to readjust! This seriously only takes a few minutes and is a great fashion to add together "window panes" if y'all currently don't have any simply love the wait of them.
PVC Strips
Another alternative is using pvc strips and cantankerous pieces for more than of a realistic look. I found these from New Panes where you lot tin gild in the quantity that you lot need. It was important for me to find a production like this and then that the outside side of our windows have realistic panes that tin also hold upwardly with the various weather elements and the Florida sun. These pvc strips from New Panes tin exist painted so I used the Pro-Industrial pigment to lucifer the window frame colour. These are measured, cut, and applied to the windows with either double sided tape or with blade clips.
The magical thing virtually these pvc strips is that they can hide the white panes and they can also create panes for people who didn't have them at all. I'chiliad really seeing a lot of this! Your basic looking window so adding window panes to step it up a notch visually. You can sentry the video below to see my installation process with these pvc strips. Scout the video beneath to see what you lot need for this method and how they work.
How many of you are nigh to become running and paint all your windows black? I would totally jump in and help if I could. I would love to come across your reaction when you peel back the record and plastic and see your new black windows for the starting time time. Make sure to tag me on your socials if you lot try this and share! Get fix to have your heed blown. You can too lookout man the full process of prepping and painting the windows below.
